(PressZoom.com) - Brisbane north side’s power supply received a boost after the switch was flicked on its newly completed $2.2 million local electricity network upgrade, Energy Minister Geoff Wilson said today.
More than 2600 homes and businesses in parts of Geebung, Virginia, Banyo, Northgate, Boondall and Nudgee will benefit from the upgrade at Energex’s Geebung substation.
The upgrade included the installation of a new 25MVA transformer, the second new transformer installed in the Geebung substation in the past two years, increasing electricity distribution capability for the area by 40 per cent.
Mr Wilson said the area was consuming record amounts of electricity and the upgrade would help Energex continue to provide reliable and safe power.
“With substantial increases forecast for domestic and commercial growth, and an increase in power consumption because of factors such as affordable air-conditioning, the area is set to increase power usage by around 15 per cent over the next five years,” Mr Wilson said.
Member for Nudgee Neil Roberts said upgrades such as the new transformer at the Geebung substation would ensure the growing demands for power were met in years to come.
“The State Government and Energex are committed to providing a reliable electricity network in the northern suburbs and throughout the South East Queensland,” Mr Roberts said.
“Importantly, the increased capacity resulting from this upgrade will give the area’s commercial district the means to expand and continue to create local jobs without placing undue pressure on the electrical network.”
Energex thanked residents, businesses and motorists for their patience during this important upgrade to the electricity network in the area.
The project is part of a record $4 billion-plus five-year capital expenditure program currently being undertaken by Energex.
In the 2007-08 financial year Energex is investing around $800 million on upgrades to its electricity network while a further $300 million-plus has been set aside to maintain and operate the network – an overall average of more than $3 million a day.
