(PressZoom.com) - Sporting clubs and enthusiasts in Smythesdale will now be able to enjoy sport day and night at the Woady Yaloak Recreation Reserve Oval thanks to new lighting funded by the Brumby Government.

Sport and Recreation Minister James Merlino was in Smythesdale today to officially open the Recreation Reserve Lighting Project, as well as the Woady Yaloak Wheels Facility.

“The Brumby Government is taking action to ensure all Victorian communities have the facilities they need to encourage healthy, active involvement in sport and recreation,” Mr Merlino said.

“Our local sports facilities are vital to the social fabric, strength and wellbeing of any community and by improving the quality of those facilities we are encouraging greater participation for people across the state.

Mr Merlino said the lighting project received $20,000 from the Brumby Government’s Country Football and Netball Program (CFNP) and required trenching and excavation, underground cabling, light assembly and tower installation to meet increased demand for use of the oval.

“The new lighting will significantly increase the use of the facility for training and evening events by residents and surrounding football teams in the Lexton Plains Football League,” he said.

The Golden Plains Shire Council and Illabarook Football Netball Club provided funding and in-kind support worth $30,300 towards the project.

Mr Merlino also opened the Woady Yaloak Wheels Facility, which received $22,000 through the Community Facility Funding Program (CFFP).

The development of the “wheels park” in Smythesdale included the construction of a BMX track and upgrades to the current skate park facility.

“This wonderful project caters for the needs of young people in the northern area of the shire by increasing the range of recreation options and opportunities of increased social interaction, while also giving bike riders and skateboarders an opportunity to show off their skills,” he said.

Mr Merlino said sporting clubs and facilities were vital to local communities and programs such as the CFNP and CFFP could play an important role in ensuring their ongoing sustainability.

“The Brumby Government is committed to helping ensure community members have the facilities they need to participate in sport and recreation, so they do not miss out on the benefits of healthy, active involvement,” he said.
