Two Scottish graduates are among six winners in a competition to recognise the UK young business leaders of tomorrow.
Deputy First Minister Nicol Stephen today congratulated Cameron Fraser from Heriot-Watt University and Caledonian Alloys Ltd, and Ross Gazey from Aberdeen's Robert Gordon University and siGEN Ltd for their success at the Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP) annual awards in London
(PressZoom) - A Scottish partnership involving Oregon Timber Frame Ltd of Jedburgh and Napier University also collected one of the 'Winning Partnerships' awards.
Mr Stephen said:
"I am delighted that these innovative projects and the individuals involved have been recognised at a UK level.
"Scotland's scientific excellence is already well known and widely recognised. The Knowledge Transfer Partnership has a vital role to play bringing science closer to business and contributing to the creation of a vibrant knowledge-based economy.
"I would like to congratulate all of today's winners."
Cameron Fraser is an associate from Heriot-Watt University who is a KTP associate with Caledonian Alloys Ltd, headquartered in West Lothian - the company recycles special alloys used in the production of aircraft engines. The project involved reducing emissions of volatile organic compounds ( VOC ) used during the cleaning and recycling process. The project exceeded reduction target for VOC emissions and gave Caledonian credibility with many large multi-national companies.
Ross Gazey is engaged in a partnership with Aberdeen based siGEN Ltd, a company involved in the design of small-scale energy systems using hydrogen fuel cells and small hydrogen production systems. The partnership is part of an ongoing collaboration between siGEN and the Robert Gordon University. Ross has been working on the Unst Renewable Energy Project ( PURE ) in Shetland. This highly successful project has already created new jobs in the community.
The Oregon Timber Frame Ltd/Napier University project involves the implementation of improved designs and manufacturing processes to reduce the cost of timber frames for house construction.
KTP is Europe's leading programme helping businesses to improve their competitiveness and productivity through the better use of knowledge, technology and skills that reside within the UK knowledge-base. The programme is funded by 13 Government organisations including DTI and the Executive.
