Colm F. Connolly, United States Attorney for the District of Delaware, announced today that a federal grand jury has returned indictments charging two North Wilmington men with various child pornography offenses. Connolly stated that the grand jury returned a 14-count indictment charging Brian L. Highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) has been extremely effective at slowing the progression of HIV infection to AIDS as well as extending the lives and improving the quality of life for those with HIV. However, some doctors have been reluctant to prescribe HAART to HIV-infected injection drug users because of concern that they may not fully benefit from the therapy. A new study by investigators funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), part of the National Institutes of Health, and led by the British Columbia Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS in Canada, suggests that this is not the case: in their large, community-based study of HIV-infected people, injection drug users and people who did not inject drugs had equivalent survival rates seven years after initiating HAART.

August 5, 2008 - University of Utah School of Medicine researchers have developed a new tool that facilitates diagnosis of anemia related to chronic illness, as well as diseases of iron overload. The results of a study detailing the new tool are published in the August 2008 issue of the journal Cell Metabolism, a publication of Cell Press.
The study demonstrated a fundamental new property - what appears to be chaotic behavior in a quantum system - in the magnetic "spins" within the nuclei or centers of atoms of frozen xenon, which normally is a gas and has been tested for making medical images of lungs.

CHARLOTTE – Aug. 6, 2008 – After spending the last several months studying ways to make the UNC Charlotte campus a safer and more secure environment, the University's Campus Safety and Security Committee has submitted its findings to Chancellor Philip L. Dubois. The 17-member committee, led by Associate Vice Chancellor David Spano, presented a 44-page report to Dubois, who will review the findings with top members of his administration before making any decisions on how to implement the recommendations.
The program, headed by Director Kaye Storm and Associate Director Paul Grossi, is designed for students who are typically low-income, historically underrepresented in higher education and the first in their families to attend college. "As a scientist, I believe strongly that different perspectives are important factors in enriching scientific investigation," Grossi said.

With heart disease maintaining top billing as the leading cause of death in the United States, a team of University of California, San Diego School of Medicine physician-researchers is proposing that aggressive intervention to lower cholesterol levels as early as childhood is the best approach available today to reducing the incidence of coronary heart disease.
Led by Ronald J. Ellis, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of neurosciences at UCSD School of Medicine, the study looked at 28 HIV patients with neuropathic pain not adequately controlled by other pain-relievers, including opiates. They took part in the controlled study as outpatients at the UCSD Medical Center. The proportion of subjects achieving pain reduction of 30 percent or more was greater for those smoking cannabis than those smoking the placebo.
The probe, developed by chemists at UC San Diego, glows when bound to a ricin-damaged part of the body�s protein-making machinery, they report in the international edition of the journal Angewandte Chemie. The Drug-Free Communities grants from the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) run for a year from September 30 this year and will help community groups work to prevent and reduce drug, alcohol, and tobacco abuse among youths and to strengthen community anti-drug coalitions among community organizations, law enforcement agencies and state anti-drug offices. All 13 coalitions received earlier grants and did again this year for meeting required criteria.
