(PressZoom) - FAIRFIELD, Conn.—Over 100 students from Sacred Heart University are spending their Spring break vacations this week giving back to those less fortunate.
About 75 students in SHU’s chapter of Habitat for Humanity and roughly 18 students in SHU’s ROTC program will help build houses at various locations throughout the country.
An additional 15 students will volunteer in an impoverished village in El Salvador.
Groups of students in SHU’s chapter of Habitat for Humanity will be sent to Biloxi, Miss., Tucson, Ariz., Beaumont, TX, and Wilmington, NC. The students sent to Mississippi and North Carolina will be focusing on the rebuilding of homes located in hurricane-ravaged areas. Students sent to Arizona will work at the Corazon Del Pueblo Habitat development and students sent to Texas will help build a home there.
Students in SHU’s ROTC program will assist Habitat for Humanity’s Coastal Fairfield County chapter with revitalization projects in Bridgeport.
Students traveling to El Salvador will help citizens in the village of Tierra Blanca located in the province of Usulatán. In past years, SHU students and faculty built a youth center, a church, houses, schools, playgrounds, and an infirmary. Similar renewal efforts are planned during this trip.
In addition to the revitalization trip to El Salvador, students raised money to purchase a wheelchair for one of the young boys of the village, a video camera used for an art therapy program for children, and a plot of land for six to eight families. The students also raised money to donate to a variety of other social and medical organizations in El Salvador.
Before departing to their respective destinations, the SHU students were blessed by Fr. Mark Villano during a special mass held at University Commons on February 24.
