(PressZoom) - (WASHINGTON, DC) – Mayor Vincent C. Gray and Mayor’s Office on Latino Affairs (OLA) Executive Director Roxana Olivas today announced that OLA has awarded more than $1.6 million in grants to 55 District-based non-profit organizations that provide health and other community services to the city’s Latino community.
“Today, the District’s Latino population represents nearly 10 percent of our total number of residents, and I’m proud to provide funding to support unique programs and resources that serve this growing community,” Mayor Gray said. “My administration is committed to ensuring that all of our residents’ needs are met, and these grants will further that goal.”
The grants – awarded after a competitive process – will help provide a wide variety of direct services to the District’s Latino residents in the areas of economic development, education, crisis intervention, education, health, English language instruction, gang prevention and intervention, youth development, workforce development, and health-care services.
OLA is awarding the grants as a way of fulfilling its mission of improving the quality of life of the District’s Latino residents and addressing a broad range of social and economic needs through strategic management of public and private partnerships, expertise on policy, community relations, civic engagement and community-based grants.
“This funding for community-based services helps Mayor Gray fulfill his goal of providing world-class services to all District residents, including members of our Latino population,” said Olivas. “The services provided by these agencies make a tremendous impact in our community. OLA continues to meet the challenges of our community through collaboration – and this funding ensures another year of significant impact for all our residents.”
